Indoor and Outdoor Fall Maintenance Tips

Man raking leaves.Bold, bright leaves, seasonal scents, crisp air…there’s something special about fall in Indianapolis that makes home a little bit home-ier by the day. Before the colder weather settles in (hot tea and soup by the fire, anyone?), make sure to keep your Pyatt Builders home in perfect shape with a few tips and tricks! Family on front porch.

From cleaning your gutters to sealing gaps around your windows, there are certain tasks you can do in and around your home to ensure that the next few months bring little surprises and — fingers crossed — no home repairs. We’ve put together a handy checklist for you to refer to as you get ready for all of the coziness ahead:

Outdoors

[ ] Clean out gutters to prevent damage to your roof or siding from rain water as well as build up of leaves

[ ] Seal gaps and cracks around windows and doors to keep wildlife out

[ ] Swap out summer screens with cool-weather storm windows and doors

[ ] Rake thick layers of leaves to prevent suffocation of the grass below as well as insect and disease problems

[ ] Put raked leaves into a compost pile or use as mulch

[ ] Fix any damage to a walkway or driveway, as well as steps

[ ] Install weather stripping or caulking around windows and doors to prevent drafts and decrease heating bills

[ ] Make sure patio and porch boards are secure

[ ] In late fall, prune your trees and shrubs to encourage growth

[ ] Clean and store mowers and summer tools, put away summer tables and chairs, grills, and children’s toys

Indoors

[ ] Have the furnace or heating system inspected by a professional and replace filters

[ ] Check carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms and put in fresh batteries

[ ] Remove built-up lint in dryer vents

[ ] Make sure the fireplace is cleaned, inspected, and repaired if needed
